How many archaeologists does it take to install a light bulb?

Answer

The site of the County Hotel in Canterbury has origins dating right back to the 12th century, and a substantial part of today’s building was first built in the 15th century.

The oldest areas of the site are the cellars and lower levels which have been many things in the nine centuries since they were built. To transform what had become a covered parking area into what will be the hotel’s new public bar and restaurant we had to excavate to accommodate some services.

Because of the age of the first foundations we worked with a council appointed archaeologist to check that we proceeded with due care to any finds that might be hidden. After exposing an ancient wall and a small delay to check the origins of some bones (animal thankfully).
