The Novello
Project description
The Grade II listed former Strand Theatre received its biggest refurbishment since it was built in 1905, with every effort made to retain original features. The auditorium was redecorated and the ceiling painting cleaned and conserved. The tiered seating was reconfigured to increase capacity and the sheet steel lining the underside was replaced with decorative plaster panels and coffering, providing improved ventilation.
Specialist decorations were made to the original plasterwork and gilding applied to panels and friezes. The bar was expanded across the front of the building and a new staircase access point was created off the main foyer to improve public circulation.
A new flying system was built for the stage, the building completely rewired, M&E services improved and specialist lighting installed. The facade was cleaned and new lighting and signage added. Works took place in areas adjacent to the Waldorf Hotel while residents were in occupation.
